1. How do you select/identify deserving people?
At the start, several years ago it was difficult as we were the ones looking out for the deserving. We used to talk to small village welfare societies, organizations already providing daily meals, etc. and through them identified the beneficiaries. But now we don’t need to do that. After hearing seeing the results achieved in neighboring villages, or through ‘word of mouth’ many get in touch with us on their own to make use of our program.
2. Who really gets in touch with GL - the beneficiaries themselves or someone on their behalf?
Only very rarely that beneficiaries get in touch directly. If they do, we do not process such individual requests; hence, we direct them to come through a cell. It is usually a concerned individual/small society/organization that talk to us on behalf of financially struggling hardworking bread winners of families. We designate such parties as Partner Leaders, Cell Leaders, etc. who would play a very responsible role once we decide to proceed with their requests and form a cell under their leadership.
3. How do you know the bona fide of the Partner Leader or the Cell Leader?
We check with the references he or she gives. Very often these partner leaders are recommended by parties known to us.
4. What kind of Agreement do you have with such partnerships?
We sign a MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding) with them where they agree to abide by all the requirements of our program. Click here to see a sample of the MOU.
5. How do you get all the details of the beneficiaries, their exact micro business need, etc.?
The partner leader has to obtain from each beneficiary the completed Micro Forward Application along with a photograph to show the type of their present skill or work they do. He/she is submits a batch of about 5 to 10 applications at a time. Click here to see a sample of the MF Application.
6. Do all beneficiaries honor their obligations & return the capital in full?
Generally yes. But there have been cases where some have defaulted, and we have had to write those off.
7. How do you manage cell activity?
We have appointed Monitoring Managers who keep in touch with the partner leaders and cell leaders. They monitor cell activity with regular follow up as well. If necessary they even contact the beneficiaries especially when anyone appears to be defaulting in their obligations.
8. What do you do if beneficiaries do not return the funds they received?
We try to modify/reduce the give-back amount further and make it less burdensome for them, or give a second grace period to re-start payments a little later if they are faced with some unforeseen situation that’s unavoidable. The respective Monitoring Manager will be in close contact with them and follow up regularly as well.
9. How often do you have fund raisers, and how do you do fund raisers?
When our fund strength with accumulated donations are not sufficient to cover a current need, we post a fund raiser on the web and share it with our whatsapp donor group as well. We are also constantly on the look out for ‘CSR’ donations from companies.
10. Do you visit the cells?
Yes we do, but not often, only whenever an opportunity comes.
